Summertime is here. So that means, ways of keeping cool are going to be more important than actually looking cool (for some). Russian advertising agency Stoyn have created a line of popsicles that are based on iconic characters, including Darth Vader, Marilyn Monroe, Che, and Donald Duck, amongst others. The design alone is amazing, but the flavors are just as interesting. Popsicle, your on notice.

A few weeks back a friend and I had the chance to check out Janelle Monae and Bruno Mars at The Roseland Ballroom in NY. The road to wondaland started off slow literally. The cab driver I called to take me to the train station couldn’t have been slower. Like literally dude was going 30mph on a 50mph road, plus he arrived later than expected. While pretty much biting and grinding my teeth, I hoped I didn’t have to keep my friend Nikkie waiting, or worse miss the train. I don’t know what was more awkward the behemoth of a dude sitting next to me who kept looking in my direction or the static radio which you could barely make out(which became increasingly louder as we drove on).
The train we were supposed to catch was going to leave at 3:11. I finally was able to reach the station at 2:53, but low and behold, my friend who was joining me wasn’t there yet. I hurriedly called her phone to see where she was and of course she was stuck on ‘girl’ time running late. As 2:58 turned to 2:59 she text me “I’m in the cab.” Wondering if she’d make it, I realized if she didn’t, we would have to wait an entire HOUR for the next. And with the experience I had just had, I quickly became discouraged. She finally came at 3:07 so we just were able to make it but of course she had to forget her ticket so she had to buy one(and not knowing how to do so properly was an added bonus).
We finally made it to the city but it happened to be raining that day so we went to buy some umbrellas (city prices ain’t no joke) but of course as soon as we went outside it would happen to just finish. With some time to kill before the show we decided to grab a bite to eat at applebees on 42nd. And yes from the look of it, it did disappoint but eh, it hit the spot. I decided to go with the “cowboy burger” while Nikkie chose the chicken tender platter.
After a meal with touching on goals, life, food and jokes we paid up (mother loving 50 bucks!!!) and went on our way. To our surprise it seemed as if our first stop shouldn’t have been umbrella shopping nor grabbing a bite, but instead heading straight to the show. The line literally formed around two blocks. Mind you that’s New York blocks. Crazy.
Luckily the line moved very fast so we didn’t have to wait too long. After getting some drinks we headed to the floor. You could pretty much tell by the concert-goers who was attending for which performance(ie I’m guessing all the pre-teen girls were looking to see Bruno Mars unless they could relate to the undertones in the song “Cold War” by Janlle Monae). There was an opening act by a group from the UK I believe, called Plan B.
They actually put on a great opening set for the show. Afterwards there was good lil wait, but well worth it. Miss Monae came and tore down the stage busting out her classics such as “Sincerely Jane” “Dance or Die” “Cold War” and my personal fav. “Wondaland” (fyi her body is so banging man!!!! I mean like wowzerz dude, don’t let the suit fool you… lol you had to see the video that was playing while accompanying the song “Wondaland”).
She truly did give an amazing performance. After her set, her crew on stage placed a cape on her, and sure enough she came back to bless the stage with a few more songs a la the late great James Brown. Then came ‘Mr. Liquor Store Blues’ himself Bruno Mars. As far as energy from the crowd(which would be expected by the hundreds of females in attendance) he definitely was a crowd favorite. He Started off by playing what he said was the first song he ever wrote, followed by a rendition of the Travis Mccoy “Billionaire.”
I’m not too familiar with his catalogue, but I can truly say he did put on a good show. Also as far as all the girls swooning over dude? SWAG!! ON A TRILLION!! Lol, I gotta start practicing my singing lessons, all I can say. But all in all, it was a good show and I suggest you check out their music if you get a chance. Won’t be disappointed. Nikkie and I basically decided to leave during his last set as to beat the stampede and headed back to penn station to catch our train. Both tired, we waited and of course this weenie fell asleep so I had to stay awake for the transfer, so we didn’t whined up in the boondocks.
Aw well. Good Tunes, Good night.

GKS is now available in Goliath RF in Spanish Harlem
Goliath RF is one of those spots you dream of getting into. On this lucky day 10-10-10, we have done it. Goliath RF was awarded 2010’s “Best Sneakers” in the “Best of New York” by New York Magazine.

The store is unmarked except for a lighted sign up top that says “Bar”. Once a bar, it was transformed into a “sneaker bar” with the coolest $#*% you can find. Amongst those things now is GKS.

This picture doesn’t even do Goliath justice. You need to hit this spot just to absorb it all in. To make this perfect Sunday, 10-10-10, even better, I had luckily parked right in front of a Mister Softee truck right outside the shop and got to celebrate alone with my chocolate cone.. lol.

Here’s to you, on the most beautiful Sunday afternoon in New York.

Pitstop after Donating at Salvation Army
So I had a lot to donate to the Salvation Army after finishing my Fall cleaning. I’ve never been to the donation centers in NJ, only to the one in New York on 46th St. Turns out there’s a SONIC next to the one in Dunellen, NJ on Route 22 East.
It’s the first Sonic I’ve ever seen. I’ve been to the West Coast plenty of times, but In-N-OUt is where it’s at. Everyone that works here is on rollerskates or rollerblades and they bring the food up to you in a car if you don’t want to come up to the walk-up “drive-thru” style ordering system. I just cleaned my car and it was such a beautiful day so no fast food in the whip.
I don’t really eat like this often, but when I do I have to get it all. I got a Sonic double cheeseburger w mayo and ketchup, tatter tots with chili and cheese and a large Coke. I probably should have gotten a shake too.. but being lactose intolerant and with the long trip back home.. no thanks.
